Galt, CA (January 4, 2009) — Building Material Distributors, Inc. [BMD] awarded twenty scholarships at their Eighteenth Annual Shareholders Meeting on April 25, 2009 in Galt, CA. The scholarships were presented by BMD’s President and CEO, Garry Tabor and the Board of Directors. The scholarship programs are part of BMD’s continued commitment to supporting the young adults of both its employee-owners and the community.
The Mort Broffman Scholarship is for full-time college students who are children of BMD employee-owners. Scholarship awards were based on academic achievement, community activity, and citizenship. Applicants completed an application, prepared a personal essay, included a list of personal achievements and submitted a letter of interest. Since 2002, the BMD Mort Broffman Scholarship has presented 108 awards. This year, 19 young adults were selected. The 2009 BMD Mort Broffman Scholarship winners were: Ryan Johnson, Chelsea Garrett, Rigoberto Fonseca II, Katie Kime, Jennifer Malagon, Jessica Malagon, Christie Liebig, Lindsey Liebig Alexis La Rose, Tara Breckenridge, Derek Colson, Trevor Deane, Ajana DeRamos, Xiomara Fonseca, Christine Gascon, Kelly Kime, Kevin Masson, Traci Okihara, and Andrew Nunez.
In 2008, BMD instituted the Steve and Anne Ellinwood Community Scholarship, which commemorates Steve and Annah’s, life-long advocacy of community programs for children. This scholarship honors Mr. Ellinwood’s contribution to BMD since 1983 as President, CEO, and now Chairman of the Board of Directors. BMD offers this scholarship opportunity to a deserving young adult in the local Galt community. This year’s winner was Maximiliano Canales, who was also a recipient last year.
